Qwest and CenturyLink Local Phone Service

A page for local phone service from Qwest was added today. I say Qwest, because I only added local service from Qwest in Qwest’s 14 states where they offer service. The 14 states are AZ, CO, ID, IA, MN, MT, NE, NM, ND, OR, SD, UT, WA & WY. The link to sign up for local and/or long distance service from Qwest is a little weird, because it routes you through their high speed internet service page first, and you have to pick a plan before you can move on. I’m pretty sure that they are doing this because the FCC is getting rid of landline phone service, and Centurylink wants new customers that they are getting from Qwest to be able to use their digital calling plans instead of the old analog system.

Basic dial tone starts somewhere between $12 and $24 per month, and it is totally dependent on where you live, so I can’t give you a better range than that. To find out for sure, you’re going to have to go over to the Qwest local phone service page and work your way through the system. There are other calling plans to chose from, if you don’t just want local service, and they go from 5 cent per minute long distance plans, all the way up to Qwest’s unlimited local and long distance phone service, that comes with all the bells and whistles for $45 per month.

CableOne Phone Service

CableOne home phone service is now listed on www.calling-plans.com. CableOne offers digital landline phone service, which is sort of a hybrid between traditional landline phone service and VoIP phone service. The cable company brings wire into the house, just like an old POTS phone company, but the calls are routed over the internet, instead of through traditional phone lines.

CableOne’s digital phone service comes with a lot of built in options, and they let you keep your current phone number. Their plans start at $25 per month for the phone service, and you can bundle high speed internet service, as well as digital television service into your plan for an additional $25 per month per service. So, bundled packages of TV, internet and phone service start at only $75 per month, which is a pretty good deal.

Insight Local and Long Distance Phone Service

Insight Cable is now offering digital phone service, and we now have a page and phone number up for them. Their home phone calling plans start at $25 per month, and offer free long distance calls within the US and Canada. (Puerto Rico too… I think) Insight will move your old phone number over to their service if you would like to move your phone number, and if not, they can give you a new on.

Insight also offers high speed internet service starting at $35 per month, and digital television service starting at $45 per month. If you’re interested in bundling your cable tv, internet service and telephone service together, those bundles start at $105 per month.

Charter Home Phone Service

We added Charter phone service to the site today. Charter offers digital phone service starting at $29.99 per month. They also offer high speed internet service starting at $29.99 per month. I currently have Charter’s $29.99 internet service, and it rocks. I get 16Megs of download speed and at least 1 Meg of upload speed. That’s enough speed to make VoIP phone calls on my MagicJack, while watching movies on Netflix, while my wife surfs the net on her computer and my son plays Xbox Live… It Rocks!

Charter also offers bundled TV, internet and phone service starting at only $66.97 if you’re looking for a bundled plan. Charter’s phone service is pretty much the same thing as landline phone service, since a technician comes out to your house and installs it for you. Once installed, your phone service works just like landline service until it gets to the local Charter point of presence, or POP. Once there, it gets routed over the internet. BUT, since it landline until then, your 911 works just like your 911 service does now, and you can keep your current phone number.

Comcast Home Phone Service Added

We added a Comcast page to the website today, as well as updating some more pages on the Lifeline Phone Service Page. Comcast is digital phone service that acts like regular landline phone service. With Comcast, they come out and connect it to your house, just like the regular landline companies do. But, when the service reaches their point of service (POP), they push it over onto the internet in the form of VoIP.

The main difference with a service like what Comcast offers is that everything works exactly like what you’re use to with your old landline provider. Comcast also offers high speed internet service and high definition television service, so if you need to save a bundle on your TV, phone and internet service, check out our Comcast page today!

Lifeline Phone Service Assistance Programs

Lifeline is a state program that helps low income families, the disabled and the elderly, pay for local phone service. All states have a lifeline program, and they are usually administered by the Department of Human Resources, or the Public Utilities Department. The program usually pays for the recipient to be hooked to the local phone network, but doesn’t pay for long distance phone service, or additional services like 3-way calling, caller id and call waiting.

Calling-Plans.com has a page that lists links to the Lifeline assistance programs in all 50 states.

Need A Home Phone?

If you need new home phone service, whether just local phone service, or both local and long distance service combined, you might want to look into bundling additional services into the package to reduce your monthly overall costs. Since most people also sign up for high speed internet service and cable television when they move, and I’m assuming you’re moving, if you’re looking for a new home phone provider, the fastest way to take care of it all at once is to order a bundled phone/cable/internet package from the same provider.

While traditional landline phone companies are now offering bundled deals too, most of theirs include DSL and Satellite TV.  DSL tends to not be as fast as cable internet service, and most landline company’s deals usually aren’t as cheap as those provided by cable companies. But, to be fair, I shouldn’t generalize, since it really depends on where you live, and what service providers are available in your area.

So, here are two resources you can use to compare prices for home phone service bundles. the first uses White Fence’s comparison search engine, and the second uses a nation wide cable company deal database that shows all the plans and prices available at your physical address. And, if you’re not that interested in doing this online, you can call the cable company directory at: 888-284-7162

CenturyLink To Buy Savvis

I need to quit bashing CenturyLink, since they obviously have a plan, and they’re starting to look smarter than I gave them credit for. I was bashing them because I thought that it was a waste of money to buy Qwest’s landline customers, since the FCC was going to quit paying USF fees to phone companies for landline customers. But, CenturyLink is obviously going to just move all those landline customers to VoIP bundles, and that will make them a mint.

With the purchase of Savvis, CenturyLink will be able to sell more cloud based services, and if you think about it, VoIP services live in the cloud, as do tons of others… Savvis will bring 48 data centers and 270k miles of fiber to the deal, and the fiber and redundancy of the data centers will really give them a boost in the SAAS (Software as a service) market.

While all this doesn’t really have a whole lot to do with the local phone service market when you just glance at it, I’m sure that CenturyLink, since they’ve proven they’re smarter than me, has a plan that will end up bundling your TV, local and long distance phone service, high speed internet service and maybe the desktops on your cloud based computers, all in one package. And, a bundled telecom/TV package like that could make them a ton in the long run…
