Is IDT Long Distance Phone Service a Good Deal? (Hint: No!)

The quick answer is no, IDT long distance telephone service isn't a good deal.

And here's why:
• IDT telephone service costs 5¢ per minute, while most discount carriers are less than 3 or 4 cents per minute for the same service.
• IDT phone is currently charging a monthly fee of $3.95, plus an additional $2.00 per month for international calling, for a total of $5.95 in monthly fees.
• Other discount carriers aren't charging any monthly fees at all. While these fees don't seem to be a big deal, they are a big deal if you do the math. If you use 300 minutes of long distance service per month, the fees would increase your per minute cost by an additional 2¢ per minute. Now, instead of paying 5¢ per minute for long distance service, you are actually paying 7¢ per minute.

Look at some of the long distance rates below, from companies that don't charge a monthly fee, and you will see why IDT's long distance phone services aren't a good deal after all.

1. Packet8 Voice Over IP Phone $24.95 per month:
   If you have high speed internet service, you need to sign up for this great unlimited VOiP product. For $24.95 per month, you get unlimited local, long distance and Canadian calling. Best of all, you can keep your current telephone number if you want to. This is what we use in our office and at home, and it ROCKS!
   
   
2. Pioneer Telephone 2.7¢ or 3.25¢ per minute:
   Pioneer Telephone is a good company with 2 plans to choose from. They have good customer service which is open from 9am to 8pm eastern time.
   
   
3. OPEX 2.7¢ per minute:
   Opex has the best customer service around. Combine that with their great rates, and they are the company I recommend most. I have been recommending there long distance service for years to my customers, and once a customer chooses Opex, they never switch to another company. To me, that proves how great their products and customer service really are.
   
   
4. Total Call International 3.9¢ per minute:
   TCI has good instate rates and is available for business or residential customers.
   
   
5. Powernet Global 3.9¢ per minute:
   Powernet Global has 4 pretty good plans to choose from, including a plan that gives you 3000 dial around minutes per month for only $29.95. They also have 24 hour customer service.
   
   
6. Total Call 3.9¢ per minute:
   The 3.9¢ plan from Total Call International offers 6 second billing with a 6 second minimum. TCI has a monthly minimum of $20.00, with a $2.50 billing fee if you don't use that much service.
