Direct Connect is a service offered from Nextel that allows users to talk to other users at the push of a button, similar to how walkie-talkies work. The walkie-talkie calls run through the Nextel National Network, allowing for a clear transfer of words. There is also the option to switch from the speakerphone mode to a private mode.

With the Nextel Direct Connect users can choose different plans that allow for unlimited walkie-talkie usage. These minutes are not deducted from regular cell minutes. There are multiple options that Nextel users can choose to personalize their Direct Connect plans.

The Nationwide Direct Connect option allows users to instantly connect to any other Nextel users with the touch of a button. International Direct Connect allows users to connect to United States users as well as users in up to five other countries, saving money on global calls.

Group Connect allows users to connect to up to 20 people at a time. With group connect users can view who is listening and who is talking, allowing managers to keep track of employees as well as making important family announcement to all at once.

Direct connect coverage is offered even when cell service is limited or non-existent. Make emergency calls or get a hold of someone who is on the cell phone line, with in up to six miles out of service range. There is an acknowledgment beep to let users know that there are other Nextel users in range.

Packages start at $5 a month on top of regular service charges. Packages include Nationwide, International, and Group Connect minutes.
