Single-Chip Breakthrough

Texas Instruments has announced the release of the single-chip cell phone. With the growing cell phone markets in other countries, handset manufacturers were looking for a way to reduce costs.

It is estimated that nearly 80% of the world's population has wireless coverage, however only 20% of the population has wireless service, due in large part to the cost. The new single-chip technology is a solution to ultra-cheap handsets, for emerging markets such as, India.

Tom Engibous, chairman of TI, "The mobile phone is already indispensable in established markets, and wireless will become even more useful in countries where today the availability of wired communication is limited." He continues by saying, "Our customers can use this technology to make ultra-low-cost handsets affordable in largely untapped consumer markets such as India, China, South America, Eastern Europe and other emerging markets."

TI's new single-chip not only reduces costs but it also reduces power requirements, board area, and silicon area performance factors that are crucial for high-volume entry-level mobile phones.


The first TI and BPL based phones will be available September 2005. Primus phone production will come later in 2005.
