Cell Phone Sales on the Rise

Gartner, a research group predicts that wireless phone sales will hit the one billion mark in 2009 and there will be 2.6 billion cell phone users. This year it is expected the 800 million cell phones will be sold.

"The mobile phone is the most prolific consumer device on the planet," Reuters quoted Gartner analyst Ben Wood. The research group also shows that almost 200 million PCs and 200 million TVs are being sold every year.

The Asia Pacfic region is an important market, according to the survey, showing that one out of every three cell phones sold will come from this market by 2009. "China and India alone will account for nearly 200 million units in 2007, with the Indian market surpassing China in 2009 to reach 139 million units," Reuters quoted Asia Pacific analyst Ann Liang.

The study also showed that the average cost of cell phones will decrease from $174, the price today, to $161 even though memory and features will improve with new cell phones. Also the Gartner survey shows that South Korea's Samsung Electronics, Finland's Nokia and United State's Motorola will acquire joint revenues of over $1.5 billion in 2009.
