Cell Phones Turned Back On in New York Tunnels

Cell phones can now be used in the four New York tunnels, where service had been restricted after the London bombings. On Tuesday service was turned back on for the Holland and Lincoln tunnels and it was resumed July 11 for the Brooklyn Battery and Queens tunnels.

Kenneth Ringler, Port Authority executive director, said in a statement, "Following ongoing consultation with security officials in New York and New Jersey, who have reviewed the circumstances specific to the Lincoln and Holland tunnels and based on current security information, the Port Authority determined it would restore cell phone service."

No specific reason had been given for the cell phone restriction, but concern was in the air because cell phones have been used for bomb detonation in the past. Since September 11, 2001 New York has been on a high security alert.
