Truck-Specific GPS System for Cell Phones

Nextel Communications Inc., ALK Technologies, and Motorola Inc. have teamed up to launch PC*MILER|Mobile, the first spoken, truck-specific GPS system for cell phones. The service is available through Nextel's GPS and JAVA enabled handsets and is powered by Motorola's Viamoto technology. The handsets can be mounted in the truck for hands free use.

The system provides routing and mapping as well as spoken directions street by street. It also provides a real time view of fleets and shipment locations. The system also helps drivers avoid roads with height restrictions and other truck specific routing information.

Craig Fiander, director, marketing, for ALK Technologies stated, "PC*MILER|Mobile is the first and only truck-specific navigation product of this kind. It's a major development in the convergence of transportation technologies and mobile phones. PC*MILER|Mobile combines routing and mapping with state-of-the-art communications and off-the-shelf hardware to deliver a solution that will quickly pay for itself in operational efficiencies and customer satisfaction."

The truck specific GPS navigation is a convenient tool that allows truckers to stay on the right track and avoid wrong directions, as well as allowing truckers to stay in touch with their business contacts and families.
