809, 284 and 876 Area Code Scams.
There are all kinds of phone related scams that involve area codes that look like they go to a US state, but they don't. Places like the Caribean and Canada, that don't require a country code, can spoof Americans because they think the call is from inside the US, and don't even think about the long distance charge for calling the person back.
The Scam Works Something Like This:
You receive a contact through email, page, or voicemail asking you to dial a telephone number with a 809, 284, 876, or some other area code. Many of these area codes are actually international long distance calls in Canada or the Caribbean and are charged at international long distance rates.
